Whitby
Whitby on the north east coast of England is one of Britain’s most attractive holiday destinations. It boasts lovely beaches, quaint cobbled streets, magnificent views, and of course fish and chip shops – everything you could want for a traditional seaside holiday!
Steeped in history, there are many interesting things to see and do in Whitby. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum is a great place to learn about this famous explorer who had strong links with the town.
Climbing the abbey steps (all 199 of them!) is also a must. These lead up to the abbey ruins and once at the top the views are simply stunning. The haunting remains of the abbey are also most definitely worth a visit!
The renowned Irish author Bram Stoker stayed in Whitby and used the town as inspiration for his gothic novel ‘Dracula’. If you’re brave enough why not visit Dracula Experience which tells you more about this spine chilling story!
Whitby is famous for the gemstone Whitby jet. This fossilised wood, which has been compressed over millions of years, is found along the coast of Yorkshire. There are many quirky, little shops that sell jewellery that incorporates this stone.
No visit to Whitby is complete fish and chips! There are numerous places to buy this traditional seaside dish – ranging from takeaways to more upmarket restaurants.
