Things to do on Anglesey (Ynys Mon)
Anglesey (Ynys Mon) is a beautiful island located off the north-west coast of Wales. It has long been a popular choice for a family holiday as it provides an excellent choice of things to do. Children and adults alike will love the long, safe, sandy beaches where you can sunbathe, build sandcastles or go paddling. There is also a good choice of activities for those days when the weather is not that great!
Anglesey Model Village is one of Wales’s most popular model villages. It is updated regularly, so there is always something new to see. It is set in lovely landscaped gardens that also include water features. Follow the path and observe the replicas of well known Anglesey landmarks built to a scale of one twelfth of the full size. This attraction also has a picnic and play area. Light refreshments are available.
Children will also love the Anglesey Sea Zoo. This is one of the largest marine aquarium in Wales and it is situated right by the Menai Strait. The habitats of over one hundred and fifty species found around the coast-line of this area have been recreated.
Foel Farm is situated in a stunning location and has lovely views of Snowdonia and the Menai Straits. There are plenty of attractions at the park which are included in the admission price. The most popular include tractor rides, pony rides (for smaller children) and feeding the animals. In Spring and Summer it may be possible to feed the lambs or calves. The park also has a café and gift shop.
Enjoy a walk in Newborough Forest which has trails, bird hides and a small lake. It is a pine forest located next to Llandwyn Beach and it is also important as a red squirrel conservation site. Dogs are welcome and facilities include parking and toilets. The forest is also open all year.
Beaumaris Castle is a world heritage site and it was in fact the last castle to be built in Wales by Edward I. It is an impressive site set in a stunning location. A number of special events take place throughout the year.
At the Bridges Exhibition you can learn about the story of the two historic bridges and also the ecology of the strait. There are children’s workshops and guided tours.
Plas Newydd is a lovely eighteenth century house located on the banks of the Menai Strait. It has stunning views of Snowdonia National Park. It a large collection of Rex Whistler works, a military museum with artefacts and large gardens. There are also woodland walks and a marine walk along the strait.
