Beautiful Towns and Villages in the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog)

There are many interesting towns and villages in the region including prosperous market towns such as Abergavenny. It is a lively town with lots going on as well as a thriving arts scene. You can purchase arts and crafts of the finest quality. The town offers a range of accommodation from camping to luxury hotels.

The pretty town of Brecon is just north of the National Park and is one of the most popular market towns in mid Wales. Visitors enjoy strolling through the narrow streets lined with Georgian and Jacobean shop fronts. One of the most important landmarks in the town is its cathedral. There is a visitor’s centre at the cathedral along with a shop and café. Brecon also boasts two museums, the Welsh Borders Museum and the Brecknock Museum. The latter has displays on the rural life and natural history of the town.

Crickhowell is a small, pretty market town that is located between the lower slopes of Table Mountain and the River Usk. The castle was constructed by the Normans and is located in the town centre. The town is also renowned for its seventeenth century bridge that spans the River Usk. It is famous for its large number of arches.

Hay-on-Wye is a small market town on the River Wye famous throughout the world for its vast number of book shops. Since 1988 it has hosted an annual literary festival.

Talgarth is an ancient town which lies beneath the Black Mountains. Tourists enjoy exploring the narrow streets and admiring the many examples of fine architecture.
