Holidaying in Snowdonia (Eryri)

Snowdonia, or Eryri as it is known in Welsh, is one of the United Kingdom’s most beautiful locations. It was the first National Park in Wales and was established in 1951. It is the third most visited National Park in England and Wales and attracts about six million visitors a year.

There are numerous things to do in this stunning area and the rugged landscape offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, climbing, mountain biking and horse riding are particularly popular. It is also possible to go white water rafting (River Tryweryn) and canoeing, and due to its proximity to the coast there are also plenty of opportunities for boating, sailing, kayaking and surfing.

The region has a number of magnificent castles. Those worthy of note include the imposing Harlech Castle, which stands on a rugged promontory overlooking the town, Penrhyn Castle, Criccieth Castle and Caenarfon Castle.

Other tourist attractions worth visiting include the Snowdon Mountain Railway, the Ffestiniog Railway, the Llechwedd Slate Caverns, Bodnant Garden and the Greenwood Forest Park.
